A landscape of change
For the first time in history more than 50% of humanity lives in urban areas, creating increasing pressures on towns and cities around the world. This is compounded by climate change, the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. In an effort to tackle the issue, the UK Government has introduced a range of new initiatives, including legislation covering sustainability and resilience. The environmental, regulatory and economic need for increased energy-efficiency, low carbon technology and eco-friendly buildings, has inspired and fuelled a drive in many sectors, to combat the challenges and engineer sustainable solutions.
A new adventure
With radical new technologies and materials at our disposal, present generations have the tools to shape the future of the urban environment. The UCL EngD in Urban Sustainability and Resilience will produce a new class of professional engineer equipped practically and intellectually to lead this adventure.
How can we maintain and support the ecological system whilst simultaneously enabling human development of the urban environment and the surrounding hinterland?
How can we mitigate the effects of environmental disasters, terrorism and the spread of disease?
The UCL EngD will address questions of resilience through 4-year doctorate projects.
