In collaboration with  Hull City Council the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering, we have funding from the EPSRC for an EngD studentship (4 year programme) for the following project:

Flood Resilience Planning in Hull

Aims:

-       Translate hydro-geological study outcomes into engineering and planning requirements for integrated urban drainage.

-       Review theories of complexity and resilience from the physical and biological sciences and mathematics to synthesise principles for effective management of drainage infrastructure and flood risk.

-       Incorporate hydro-geological and flood risk information with resilience principles into robust drainage engineering and planning.

 

Method:

The project will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative research techniques and will be based on developing an integrated approach to drainage and flood risk management within Hull City Council. Hydro-geological maps and data produced by Yorkshire Water will provide the basis for quantitative assessment of flood risks in Hull and drainage design. This may include risks to health and safety, economic costs, financial losses and environmental harm, which will be calculated using accepted methodologies for economic costing and risk calculation. A more robust understanding of the nature of hydro-geology and flood risk will provide the basis for drainage and flood resilience planning, which will be underpinned by an extensive review of complexity science literature. 

Outcomes:

-       Improved translation of hydro-geological data into urban drainage planning.

-       Principles for flood resilience and drainage planning based on complexity science and theories of resilience.

-       Research portfolio outlining how these ideas have been developed in relations to integrated drainage planning at Hull City Council.
